Ah,the things we do to keep from going completely bonkers at work...

I have two little games I like to play with customers, just to keep them off balance. I have about half of them convinced I have psychic powers.

1) Destination Known. As soon as a customer walks in the door, tell them immediately what ZIP code their package is going to. Put on a little psychic show, if you like: close your eyes, press your hand to your forehead, concentrate, and tell them "that package is going to ZIP Code 76000, Fort Worth, Texas."

2) In the middle of a conversation, say "I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to answer the phone in a moment." Then continue the conversation as normal while you walk to the phone, place your hand on the receiver, and wait for it to ring -- almost always within 10-20 seconds.

2a) It's even more fun when your team mate plays along. "Hey, Paul?" "Yup, I'll get it." "Thanks." (To customer) "The phone's about to ring, and he's going to answer it so we don't get interrupted."

The looks on their faces when we prove to be absolutely right is so priceless...

I just found out that I am being considered for a "Beacon." Apparently something I did impressed someone who wears a tie, and this is the consequence.

Before it goes too far, I find myself wondering: what the hell is a "Beacon" (apart from the official name for the "splat" logo), and is it worth the least bit getting excited over? Is it overall a good thing, or does it just lead to the old "increased performance leads to increased expectations?"

The damnedest thing is, I know exactly what I did -- and I honestly don't see anything that exceptional about it. That several people in lofty positions disagree makes me wonder what the hell is going on out there in other centers.
